Fotografie + English: American soldier guarding a Heinkel He 162 Volksjäger. It is not clear where the picture was taken. The Heinkel He 162 was a German single engined, jet powered fighter aircraft fielded by the Luftwaffe in WWII. Designed and built quickly, and made primarily of wood it was nevertheless the fastest of the first generation of Axis and Allied jets. It was called Volksjäger,Salamander or Spatz ("Sparrow").

This He 162 "White 4" of fighter unit JG1 was captured by British troops at Leck in Northern Germany. 3 He 162 were subsequently brought to Kassel. Originally, it was planned to take these jets to the US for evaluation.

De Heinkel He 162 was een eenmotorig straalvliegtuig dat door de Luftwaffe bij het einde van de oorlog werd ingezet. Het was snel ontworpen en snel gebouwd, voornamelijk uit hout, maar was niettemin het snelste van de eerste generatie straalvliegtuigen. Het had de bijnamen Volksjäger, Salamander en Spatz (spreeuw).
