• Holzschnitt aus: Jost Amman (1539-1591): Eygentliche Beschreibung aller Stände auff Erden hoher und nidriger, geistlicher und weltlicher, aller Künsten, Handwerken und Händeln ... (erstmals Frankfurt am Main 1568; auch bekannt als: Das Ständebuch) Im Buch wird das Bild von folgendem Text von Hans Sachs begleitet:

“Ich brauch Hadern zu meiner Mül
Dran treibt mirs Rad deß wassers viel,
Daß mir die zschnitn Hadern nelt,
Das zeug wirt in wasser eingequelt,
Drauß mach ich Pogn auff de filtz bring,
Durch preß das wasser darauß zwing.
Denn henck ichs auff, laß drucken wern,

Schneeweiß und glatt, so hat mans gern.”

(Anmerkungen: Hadern = Lumpen; nelt = Druckfehler für melt: mahlt; Pogn = Bogen; preß = Pressen; drucken = trocken)

Where the waters drive my wheel,
So that I can make a bow from felt,
While pressing the water out.
Then I hang it up, to let it dry,

Snow-white and smooth, the way people like it.”
