• Bickerton was settled in 1840 by fishermen from Peggy's Cove. Although Bickerton Island was settled first, the area surrounding the lighthouse was settled soon afterwards.
• The first of three lighthouses was constructed in 1901 on west extremity of Barachois Head. The lighthouse was replaced in 1924 by a temporary light and then in 1930 a combined light and keeper's dwelling was built, which still remains at the site
• In 1962 the present lighthouse was built, a square white concrete tower, attached to fog alarm building.
