David Scott Mustaine (* 13. září, 1961, La Mesa, Kalifornie, USA) je kytarista, skladatel a zpěvák speed/thrash metalové skupiny Megadeth. Vyrůstal na různých předměstích jižní Kalifornie. Jako hlavní figura skupiny Megadeth, bývalý kytarista a spoluskladatel Metallicy je jeden z hrstky lidí, považovaných za průkopníky thrash a speed metalu. Před Metallicou hrál v kapele Panic. K Metallice se připojil po inzerátu, který dal do místních novin The Recycler bubeník. Neznámější během jeho činnosti v Metallice je song „The Four Horsemen“ z alba Kill 'Em All, který sám napsal a později s původním textem vydal na prvním albu Megadeth jako „Mechanix“. S Metallicou ale vydžel jen do roku 1983, kdy byl kvůli problémům s alkoholem a drogami vyhozen. Poté si dal za cíl založit skupinu ještě úspěšnější než Metallica. Ještě v roce 1983 založil skupinu Fallen Angels, která však netrvala dlouho. V létě potkal basáka Dava Ellefsona a založil Megadeth; tehdy s kytaristou Gregem Handevidtem a bubeníkem Dijonem Carruthersem.
